About Rose Wark
Welcome to my online gallery! I am a professional painter, teacher and amateur photographer living in the Montreal area.
I've had the good fortune to be able to spend days and months wandering in the wild places of Canada, and it has made a deep and lasting impression on me.
A desire to communicate a love of nature and an early aptitude for drawing started me on course for a life of artistic endeavor. Since then I’ve been inspired by travel to Asia and Europe and studies in painting and life drawing at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
I paint and draw figures, portraits, abstract and especially landscapes. My technique is based on a traditional method of layering opaque and transparent colours.
In the mixed media paintings, I like to play with the line between reality and the representation of reality in that there are real objects (usually leaves or minerals) placed beside highly resolved paintings of objects. I try to create paintings that are sensual and give the feeling of being immersed in the colours and patterns of our natural world.
While mostly painting in a figurative style, I use a wide variety of techniques and mediums. I like to play with the line between reality and dream, weaving together the past and present.
Over the years, I have exhibited in Canada, Japan and the U.S. and have work in private and corporate collections.
Presently I'm working on a forest series. There are scenes from the temperate rainforests of Haida Gwaii on the western coast of Canada, the eastern deciduous forests of North America, the boreal and the mountains of Kyushu in Japan. I've just come back from Dominica where there is one of the last untouched wilderness areas in the islands of the Caribean. Now working on a series of paintings from this wonderful place.
